Textile Block: The California Era
Textile Block houses were constructed of concrete blocks. "The system consisted of thin concrete blocks cast with a groove on four edges that allowed them to fit together. These would be set up in a row, and then a strand of reinforcing steel was laid in the groove to 'stitch' the blocks together- thus becoming a woven textile system. Blocks were laid up on both sides of the intended wall, and then concrete poured in the interstitial space to form a solid wall" (Hess 182). This new system would allow for houses to be built quickly and more affordably due to the fact that the blocks were already fabricated.
